Michael Longley has received many awards for his poetry, among them the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Hawthornden Prize and the Griffin International Prize. His Collected Poems was published in 2006, and Sidelines: Selected Prose in 2017. In 2001 he received the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry, and in 2003 the Wilfred Owen Award. He was appointed CBE in 2010, and from 2007 to 2010 was Ireland Professor of Poetry.
In 2017 he received the PEN Pinter Prize, and in 2018 the inaugural Yakamochi Medal. In 2015 he was made a Freeman of the City of Belfast, where he and his wife the critic Edna Longley live and work. In 2022 he was awarded the prestigious Feltrinelli International Poetry Prize for a lifetime’s achievement. Other awards include the Irish-American Cultural Institute Award and the Eric Gregory Award, which he shared with Derek Mahon in 1965. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a member of Aosdána and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
His twelfth and most recent poetry collection is The Candlelight Master (Jonathan Cape, 2020), and his numerous others include No Continuing City (1969), An Exploded View (1973), Man lying on a Wall (1976), The Echo Gate (1979), The Ghost Orchid (1995), which was short-listed for the T.S. Eliot Award. Gorse Fires won the Whitbread Poetry Prize in 1991, and The Weather in Japan won the Irish Times Literature Prize for Poetry, the Hawthornden Prize and the T.S. Eliot Prize in 2001. He published an autobiographical work, Tuppeny Stung, in 1994, and has edited selections of poems by Louis MacNeice and W.R. Rodgers.
This event will be both in-person, hosted in the Hayloft bar, upstairs in Long Valley, Winthrop St Cork, as well as on Zoom (which is limited to 100 people). Participation in the open-mic session and five word challenge is open to both in-person and virtual attendees. The session will be live-streamed at obheal.ie/live and via Ó Bhéal’s Vimeo, Facebook and YouTube channels. Note to Participants: Our hybrid events are recorded and remain viewable on video via these same channels.
We are no longer posting the zoom link via our social media channels. Upon written request to info@obheal.ie with a sentence outlining your reason for participation, a link to join the session will be emailed to you on the evening of the event, which is expected to run for between 2-3 hours.

8.30pm: Five Word Challenge (max 30 – after the allotted 15 minutes writing time);
9.20/30pm: Featured Guest Poet (30-40 minutes);
10:20pm: Open-Mic Session for original poetry (max 20).

Luke Morgan‘s second collection Beast is new from Arlen House in 2022, and in the words of Victoria Kennefick, is “an astonishly original exploration of the wildness that exists within us”. His debut collection, Honest Walls was published in 2016. His work has been published in various journals worldwide, including Poetry Review, Poetry Ireland Review and Cyphers. He lives and works in Galway as a filmmaker, writer and theatre director.
Molly Twomey grew up in Lismore, County Waterford, and graduated in 2019 with an MA in Creative Writing from University College Cork. She runs an online international poetry event, Just to Say, sponsored by Jacar Press. In 2021, she was chosen for Poetry Ireland’s Introductions Series and awarded an Arts Council Literature Bursary. Her debut collection, Raised Among Vultures, was published in May 2022 with The Gallery Press.
